According to a recent study conducted by University of California, the increased consumption of sugar-sweetened sports drinks, fruit drinks and sodas has led to an increase in the number of diabetes and heart disease cases over the last 10 years.
The report, which was presented at the 50th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology and Prevention in San Francisco, stated that the huge increase in the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages in the last decade, contributed to 130,000 new cases of diabetes and 14,000 cases of coronary heart diseases.
The study’s Lead Author Litsa Lambrakos was quoted by the Times of India as saying: “We can demonstrate an association between daily consumption of sugared beverages and diabetes risk and translate this information into estimates of the current diabetes and cardiovascular diseases that can be attributed to the rise in consumption of these drinks. We want to make the general public more aware of the adverse health outcomes of consuming these drinks over time and help support disease prevention and curb consumption of these drinks.”
